Church. Henry was a carpenter. He was educated at could read and write.⁷ He was R.C.¹ He married Mary FOLEY on 24 Mar 1832 in St. Philip's, Sydney.⁷ Vol. V1832948 16, Reg. yr. 1832 Reg. no. 0. NSW Pioneers marriages. Henry died on 7 Jul 1886 in Macquarie Street, Asylum, Parramatta, N.S.W., Australia.^{1 3} .8614../..1886. Bronchitis. Henry was buried on 8 Jul 1886 in Roman Catholic Cemetery, Rookwood, N.S.W.^{1 3} Grave No: 2004, The Catholic Office states there are no surviving records of a burial for Henry Crook, paperwork illedgible or lost, most probably given a paupers grave.

Henry's father, Joseph Crook, deserted the British army, was court martialled with a sentence of life, and transported in 1807 to Australia on the 'Duke of Portland' and his family came on the accompanying ship 'Young William'. "It is noted on the Reel 722...4/2151.2 at St Philips, Sydney that Henry was married by consent of the Governor to Miss Mary Foley a "Bonded" Irish girl aged 21, he being 35, this would mean he was born around 1797, and came out to Australia a free settler, on the Ship "Young William" in 1809, this would make him Abt 12 yrs old. Henry is noted to have been re-baptised as an adult, this would be due to his wife being a catholic and he a protestant, so he was baptised in the faith of Roman Catholic. 16 August 1843 Henry re-baptised [Henry Patrick] Aged 46, West Maitland Catholic Church, N.S.W. The only death certificate I can find at this point is a Henry Crook ,died 7th July 1886, in Parramatta with no details. Given a Paupers Grave""On his death registration he is noted as being buried in the Roman Catholic Section Rookwood, Rookwood Cemetery has no details of his burial, the office stating that if he was given a paupers grave and given the period, no details were kept"

Senile marasmus. Exhaustion. Grave No: 2004, Section 0, Grave no 236, Old Catholic Cemetery, Rookwood. Mary was buried on 28 Jun 1898 in Rookwood cemetery. R.C. section. "Mary Crook, wife of Henry Crook ,was born between 1807-1811 in Limerick, Ireland. Mary Foley was sentenced 7 years at Limerick, on the 7th day of March, 1827 for stealing clothes. She was a nurse girl ( or maid ) aged Abt 20 years old of Roman Catholic Religion, single and could not read or write. She had no former convictions, and her native place of abode was Limerick. Described as being 5 feet 1/2 inch tall. Ruddy fair complexion , light brown hair, hazel eyes, a small perpendicular scar at inner part of her left eyebrow. "IF" on upper part of right arm (probably a birthmark or tattoo). She wasn't transported till four years after her conviction, it is not known where she spent this time, but was finally transported to Australia on the Ship "Palambam" , which left Cork on 23rd March, 1831 arriving in Sydney on 31st July 1831.The Master of the ship was Geo Willis and the accompanying Surgeon Superintendent was James Osborne ( State Archives

Micro Film No 698/3 ) From Convict Films 317-331 Indent No 112 State Archives. On arrival in Sydney she was sent to work for a Mr Jas. Rufsell. It's later noted on the Catholic Church Reel of St Mary, ( Reel no 722 4/2151..4..of 1832), William Baker aged 20 "BONDED" who arrived on the ship "Champion" in 1827, and applied to marry Mary Foley aged 20 . Obviously this did not take place as later noted , at St Philip's Church, Sydney, ( Reel 722...4/2151.2 of 1832) , Application of marriage, with Governor's Consent to Marry,( They had to receive the Governors consent , as she was still on bond for a few more years, Convict permission to marry No 74 State Archives ) ,Mary Foley ,aged 21 "BONDED" , arrived on the ship , "Palambam" in 1831, to Henry Crook, aged 35 yrs, a free , new settler, from Great Britain arrived on the Ship " Young William " in 1809, they were wed on the 24th March 1832, at St Philips Sydney.

Mary received her Certificate of Freedom No 34/1116. Dated 9th September 1834.

It is noted on the 14th October 1856, she attended the birth of her granddaughter, Margaret Hellmers, helping her daughter Elizabeth during Labor, at Maitland. She lived in Maitland from 1838 to 1870.

Noted that the Marriage of her son Joseph Henry Crook and Ann Kirkwood took place at the residence of Mrs Mary Crook of Horse Shoe Bend, West Maitland in 1863.

Mary is noted as the witness [signing her name with a cross] at the wedding of her son Henry Crook, to Selina Sexton on the 1st August 1870, West Maitland. Mary is noted as Mary Crook, Midwife of West Maitland, attending her daughter-in-law Selina Crook during her birth of her son Robert Henry Crook dated 31st August 1870.

"After having a large family and living in Maitland from around 1837, Mary is noted to be still living in Maitland as late as the 1st August 1870, at the wedding of Henry Crook to Selina Sexton, Mary is noted as being a witness signing her name with a cross as her mark Mary X Crook.

The family started to appear in the Redfern area, with daughter Elizabeth Hellmers in Sydney c1858, John and family were in Redfern by 1867, as were William's family in 1868, followed later by Henry and Selina also settling in the Redfern area with their son Robert who wed in Redfern in 1878.

I would say that at a guess Mary finally traveled down to live in Sydney with her sons after 1870, after the marriage of Henry jr, living another 28 years around her children, at least 34 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren that had been born before her death in 1898, including my grandmother Irene Mary Hall who was born in 1895. Mary would spend her last years in Newington Asylum, Sydney, passing away on the 26 June 1898".

Henry probably died Abt 1886. Mary died at Newington Asylum for Old Woman on the 26th June ,1898 aged 88 years old of Senile Marasmus and Exhaustion and was buried in Rookwood ,Roman Catholic Section on 28th June 1898. Leaving only four surviving children Joseph, Elizabeth, John and William."

There is some uncertainty about Mary's age as there is a baptism for mary Foley on 31st december 1806 at St. Michael's in Limerick City to a Cornelius Foley and Ellen Hushen. However she stated her father's name as Patrick^1,3,7.

"The "Duke of Portland", a convict ship of male prisoners, sailed in the company of the storeship "Young William", carrying Cargo, New Settlers and Visitors and a regiment of Soldiers. Joseph's family had been able to secure passage on the "Young William" to come to Australia and be close to husband and father Joseph. They included his wife Elizabeth, sons John and Henry, and daughters Elizabeth Margaret, Sarah, and Emma. They are all listed as individual adults travelling except for Henry and Emma who are listed as two children travelling with their mother Elizabeth Crook."

"Emma sailed aboard the ship Daphne against her mothers will [re-court case re Robert Murray 1819], the term abduction was used of Assistant Superintendent of Police Robert L Murray taking Emma Crook aboard the 'Daphne' against Government orders, the ship sailed for Calcutta, India, sailing via Bass Strait stopping at several islands to purchase sealskins from sealers in the area. On 26 October a gale rose and Captain Howard sheltered in the lee of East Island. [near Deal Island of the coast of Tasmania]. Howard went ashore probably to find sealers. On arriving on shore he noticed that the Daphne was being driven towards the rocks. He returned on board but could do little to save the brig. He therefore ordered the passengers and crew to abandon ship. The passengers made it to shore safely but the Daphne was totally destroyed. The longboat was badly damaged and it took Howard and his crew some eight days to repair it. He then took his chief mate and three seamen and headed to Launceston on 4 August. Blown off course he eventually made Hobart on the 14th of November 1819 where he chartered the sloop Governor Sorell to rescue the eight passengers and crew remaining on East Island. The sloop 'Governor Sorell' set out to rescue the survivors, but disappeared without trace. Meanwhile, the schooner 'John Palmer' led by Captain Bastian, arrived at the site of the shipwrecked Daphne at East Island in the Kent Group on 23 November 1819 where it picked up three passengers from the Daphne, including Emma Crook, and a Lascar seaman. For reasons unknown the ship also picked up a bag of coin containing 400 pounds from the Daphne. As the ship attempted to beat out of the bay the ship was driven onto the rocks and became a total wreck. Emma Crook drowned, but the remaining sailors and passengers made it to shore. So it was several months before all the survivors were rescued"

1819 Daphne. One of Tasmanias most unfortunate early shipowners must surely have been Captain John Howard, for whom the year 1819 brought a series of disasters culminating in his death and the loss of three ships in Bass Strait. Arriving at Hobart as the master of the ship Duke of Wellington, on 22 October 1817, he had later taken over the European Store at Macquarie Point, Hobart and purchased the schooner Henrietta Packet, for the Sydney trade. The first sea going vessel built in Tasmania, the vessel was soon lengthened and renamed Young Lachlan. However on 27 February 1819 the Young Lachlan, was seized by a party of thirteen convicts, who escaped to Java in her. Three months later, Howard learned that the stock he had consigned on board the Duke of Wellington, for Mauritius had all died. He had just purchased the brig Daphne, at Sydney, and now resolved to rebuild his fortunes by selling his local assets and acquiring a cargo of seal skins for the Indian market. The Daphne sailed from Sydney for the Bass Straits Islands on the 10th. October 1819, and arrived at the Kent Group on the 26th. to shelter 35 from heavy westerly gales. Captain Howard and many of his crew went ashore in the longboat, and then noticed that the brig was dragging its anchors. By the time too order to veer out more cable had reached the ship, she was to close to the rocks for this to be done, and all hands left her in the boats. Shortly afterwards the Daphne went onto the rocks and broke up in ten minutes. The longboat managed to recover a cask of flour and some pieces of salt beef, which was all that could be recovered from the wreck. On 4 November, Howard, the chief officer and three crew left in the longboat for Port Dalrymple. They were blown eastwards by heavy gales and then headed for Hobart, where they arrived on the 14th. Howard then chartered the sloop Governor Sorell to assist those left at the Kent Group. 1819 John Palmer. On the 21st. November 1819, the schooner John Palmer on a voyage from Launceston to the Bass Strait Islands, probably sealing, put into the Kent Group to shelter from heavy gales. The eight castaways from the Daphne including two women passengers were located and four were taken on board, along with a bag of 400 dollars belonging to Captain Howard, bringing to fourteen the total complement of the schooner. While beating out of Murrays Pass two days later, however, the schooner mis-stayed and went onto the rocks at East Island. Like the Daphne four weeks earlier the Daphnes passengers as well as Captain Howards dollars were lost. The two groups of castaways did not get back together again, and the schooners Master, Captain Bastian, the owner, and part of the crew later reached Launceston in one of the boats^{3,11,12,13,14,15,16}.

Elizabeth was 1836 - Roman Catholic. 1902Wesleyan.³ She married Johann Friedrich HELLMERS on 23 Sep 1855 in Catholic Church, West Maitland, N.S.W.⁷ She died on 13 May 1902 in Canley Vale, Liverpool, Sydney.^{7 7} Regn. no.5722. Cardiac disease. Elizabeth was buried on 14 May 1902 in Rookwood cemetery, Sydney. Old Wesleyan cemetery section 4C grave 270.^{18 19 20 3} A double grave shared with her husband John Frederick Hellmers who joined her in 1907.

Elizabeth Crook was the second of 8 children to Henry Crook and Mary Foley, born in Sydney in 1836 and died in 1902 after producing 14 children with Johann Hellmers. She was buried in a double grave shared with her husband John Frederick Hellmers who joined her in 1907.

In 1855 it's noted that Elizabeth, could not sign her name on the marriage certificate to John Hellmers and is marked with an X.

In 1894 she was referred to as Betsy Hellmers nee Crook, on the death registration of her daughter, Wilhelmina's death.

"Johann Friedrich was born in Steinhausen, Bockhorn, Grand Duchy of Oldenburg, in 1829.

He was the son of Almuth Margaret & Christian Friedrich Hellmers, a Damask Weaver, they lived on a farming estate owned by the Hellmers since 1750 at Steinhausen in the Municipality of Bockhorn in the old Grand Duchy of Oldenburg - which later became Schleswig Holstein.

He learnt the trade of Cabinet Making & later was noted to be a Master Cabinet Maker living in Hamburg in 1853.

It seems there was a form of army conscription and Johann had moved to Hamburg to avoid being drafted into the army, he received a letter from his brother-in-law Johann Hopken, warning him if he was thinking of staying in Germany, he should front up around the 4th of April to the appropriate authority as announced in the public newspapers, and then the punishment won't be too hazardous. This led him to embrace the thought of leaving his homeland.

He shortly after emigrated on the " Meteor " from Hamburg sailing to New South Wales, Australia in 1854 aged 25 to start a whole new life.

He later met & married Elizabeth Crook the following year, on the twenty third of September 1855, at West Maitland, they were to have a long life together with a large family of 14 children & 36 grandchildren.

Naturalization was granted in January 1860, and he took the Oath on the twenty second day of September 1862. (Naturalization Papers of 1860-62)"

Wilhelmina married George Gee in 1878, and with him came two children from his 1st marriage to

Emma Bush, they were Eliza Ophelia Gee and Albert Adolphus Gee, Wilhelmina and George went

on to have 2 children George Frederick Gee and Elizabeth May Gee, her husband George died in

1881 and so Wilhelmina now with 4 children to rear, remarried in 1884 to Sidney Charles Young,

they went on to have a further 3 children, Sidney Charles Young, Winifred Mabel Young and

Constance Muriel Young, Wilhelmina then died tragically in her prime of Tubercular Pneumonia on

the 24th January 1894, not quite 36, and widower, Sidney Charles Young re married to rear the

Gee and Young brood in a 12 months time in 1895 to Harriet Moore and had a further 3 children,

Reginald, Irene and Phillip, a total of 10 half brothers and sisters, Sidney Charles Young died in

1930, and his wife Harriet died in 1952.

Technically Wilhelmina had 5 children and 5 step children from her two marriages. [I have traced

George Adolphus GEE, son of Joseph GEE (1814-1905) and Eliza Ophelia SHORT (bap.1812, bur.1879), was born c. 1839 in Chippenham, Wiltshire, England. He was baptised on 10 Mar 1839 in Chippenham. He was a Railway Guard, Mariner.^{3 21} He married Emma Thomsett Crothall CRITTLE on 8 Jul 1867 in Sydney. He died in 1881 in Redfern.^{1 2 3} Specific enlargement of the Liver. George was buried on 3 Aug 1881 in Necropolis, Rookwood Cemetery.

Sophia Hellmers was born in Kingston Road, Macdonald town, near the present Australia Street, later known as Kingston then Newtown. She was cremated and her ashes were interred within her husband, David's grave in the Methodist section of Rookwood Cemetery.

David was born in 1858 to the first of his father's 3 wives as the younger brother to Edward, born in 1852. He was called Daniel in his mother's death certificate.

He became a master builder and bricklayer.

His mother Mary died when he was just 1.His father remarried in 1862 when he was 4. David married Sophia Hellmers, the 3rd. of 14 children to German migrant Johann Friedrich Hellmers in 1881 at Liverpool, Sydney. Together they produced 7 children, 5 boys and 2 girls. They lived mainly in the Balmain area.

The uncle of David's father, Moses Slater, witness at david's marriage left him property: "Moses Slater, Gentleman, made his will on 25th August, 1876, indicating he has a house in Vincent

St., Balmain and that he will leave it to Daniel Hall, his nephew (son of Mary and David Hall). He

indicates that, after Daniel's death the house is to go to David Hall (Daniel's son) and to his heirs

and assigns for ever. He appoints David Hall as the Executor of his will."

"Probate was granted to David Hall of Balmain near Sydney, bricklayer, on 10th November, 1893.

The estate was sworn at £200." Daniel Hall died on 17 December 1907 and the house passed to David Hall who sold it to A T Lown in September 1908.

David Poole Hall died of cancer , aged 55 in 1914 at Drummoyne. He was buried in the Methodist cemetery at Rookwood. His wife's ashes were also interred later in the grave.

He embarked in April 1916 foroverseas service on HMAT "Makarini", served in France until 1918, and returned to Australia, on " Prinz Ludwig" in July1919, diembarking in October. He was a transport driver for the 6th Australian Motor Transport Company. He married in the UK, on leave from France, during the War.

Fred Hall was born in Balmain in 1893, the 5th of 7 children. He became a bricklayer and ironworker. In December 1904 the Hall family, Sophia, David, Fred, Irene and Olive travelled by ship to Natal, South Africa, no doubt to visit Fred's brother Dave who had moved there to find work. Brother Bert may also have been in South Africa by then.

Fred's father David Poole Hall died at the beginning of WW1. The wider Hall family were builders, stonemasons and bricklayers and he found his calling as a tradesman. Fred enlisted in the Australian Army on 23/10/16. His WW1 Army rank was No. 16981, rank - sapper, 9th Field Co. Engineers. He Left Australia in 1917, age 22, for England, to France, where he was injured in 1917, thence to hospital, then leave to England, and returned to Australia as an invalid in 1918.discharge 9/4/19, d.o.b. 15/11/93, (RTA 9.12.18).

He was demobilised in Australia in 1919.He applied to Repatriation Department because of his injuries sustained in France on 17/8/35, and this was rejected rejected 17/10/35. Fred's WW1 notebook had scratched on the cover the names of Messines, Ypres, Armantieres, Pleogsteert,Pascengale, Hemnel and Villers-Bretonnau. There were also the addresses of his South African and English cousins as well as his brothers in the AIF.

Fred was employed before and after enlistment at Tooth-s Brewery as a bricklayer.He took up the cause of ex-soldiers with a passion and was Gladesville RSL Vice-President in 1921 (see photo) and was still an office-bearer in 1938. He married Isabel McLean in 1922 at age 28, and had 2 daughters Jean and Shirley as well as ste-daughter Betty. His war wounds bothered him for the rest of his life and daughter Jean remembered tending to them as a young woman.

George N A Cleland was born in 1892in Pyrmont, Sydney to George N Cleland and Bellinda Jones, the 2nd of 4 children. He married Mary Hall in 1914. They had 3 children before George died in 1976.

"George was a championship light weight boxer and won several gold medals in his youth. He also managed a Roller & Ice skating Rink at Drummoyne, he did stunts, jumping over several chairs lined up and landing on his roller skates at the other end.He met Irene and she later said that she would not marry him unless he gave up boxing.

They eloped to the Manse in Balmain getting married, as Irene's parents wanted to send her to Africa, to stay with her elder brother, so she would not see young George who was not of their class, they kept it a secret, and still lived at their respective family homes, until Olive, Irene's sister found the marriage certificate in her dowry

Not long after the birth of Beryl in 1929 the Sydney Harbour Bridge was built over several years, on the opening day, George and Irene, with Beryl on her lap, Olga & Irving and their housemaid in their large touring car, waited for the flag to race across the bridge for all public cars after the official opening, George coveted the Honour of driving the first car across the bridge in 1932:

First Car Across Sydney Harbour Bridge.

On the tick of midnight of March 19th, Mr George A. Cleland of Gladesvllle, Sydney, put his foot hard down on the accelerator of his Chrysler. With a long line of equally eager motorists behind him, he sped over a new highway-the Southern approach to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, just declared open, for traffic. By a safe margin, he achieved the unique honour of being the first member of the motoring public to cross that mighty steel span of Sydney's Harbour. For hours afterwards toll-collectors and the police had a tremendous task endeavouring to keep six long lines of, motor vehicles running smoothly. At one time, the queue on the city'side of the Harbour extended from the toll-house past the Sydney Town Hall. Cars on the northern side formed another queue that was at times almost a mile long. It is interesting to note that Mr. Cleland's car was shod with Perdriau Tyres-purely Australian products that, in their own field, are representative of the same spirit of Australian

enterprise and achievement that visualised and finally completed the Bridge itself.

Irene formed a good business as proprietress of the King Street Service station on the corner of King and Day Street's, Sydney. Under the Garage, on a lower level, George had his own business as an Electric Oxy Welder, they had a unique partnership and lasted till they retired, later they leased the Garage out, till the Service Station was later pulled down in the late sixties to make way for the western distributor link.

George died at Tamworth Base Hospital, after several strokes, He was staying with his daughter Olga and son-in-law Clem on their Farm at "Echo Hills" Kootingal, near Tamworth with his wife Irene, convalescing after a recent stroke, he took ill, with yet another more crippling one, was placed in hospital where he died 10 days later on September 13th 1976. George was Cremated at Tamworth's New England Crematorium, and later Placed in a niche in the Garden Wall at Lincoln Grove Memorial Lawn Cemetery with a Plaque over it, Irene joined him by his side a year later in

1977."

Sir Harold George Raggatt (1900-1968), geologist, was born on 25 January 1900 in North Sydney, second of five

children of Percy Claude Raggatt, a native-born grocer, and his wife Martha Annie, née Barker, who came from

Wales.

Harold attended Gordon Public School where, through its headmaster 'Cocky' Fry, he gained a love of the English

language. He proceeded to Sydney Technical High School and the University of Sydney (B.Sc., 1922; M.Sc., 1932;

D.Sc., 1939). After completing the first year of his undergraduate degree, he enlisted in the Australian Imperial

Force on 4 March 1918 and embarked for England seventeen days later. In February 1919 he joined the 13th Field

Company, Engineers, which undertook reconstruction work in the Meuse Valley, France. He also helped to build

the monument to the 4th Division at Bellenglise, near St Quentin.

Demobilized from the A.I.F. in Sydney on 28 September 1919, Raggatt resumed his university course. He initially

found it difficult to study, but came under the influence of Sir Edgeworth David and decided to pursue a career in

geology. In mid-1922 he joined the team which conducted the Geological Survey of New South Wales; he became

a keen publicist and in 1924-25 made radio broadcasts, beginning with a popular account of the geology of Sydney.

At St Philip's Anglican Church, Sydney, on 19 January 1927 he married Edith Thora Hellmers, a schoolteacher who

had been a fellow undergraduate.

Sir Harold died of myocardial infarction on 2 November 1968 in his home at Hughes, Canberra, and was cremated

with Presbyterian forms; his wife and their daughter survived him. The Raggatt Mountains in Enderby Land,

Antarctica, are named after him"³⁰
