George N A Cleland was born in 1892in Pyrmont, Sydney to George N Cleland and Bellinda Jones, the 2nd of 4 children. He married Mary Hall in 1914. They had 3 children before George died in 1976. "George was a championship light weight boxer and won several gold medals in his youth. He also managed a Roller & Ice skating Rink at Drummoyne, he did stunts, jumping over several chairs lined up and landing on his roller skates at the other end.He met Irene and she later said that she would not marry him unless he gave up boxing. They eloped to the Manse in Balmain getting married, as Irene's parents wanted to send her to Africa, to stay with her elder brother, so she would not see young George who was not of their class, they kept it a secret, and still lived at their respective family homes, until Olive, Irene's sister found the marriage certificate in her dowry still lived at their respective family homes, until Olive, Irene's sister found the marriage certificate in her dowry box, Irene was thrown out of the house by her mother, 'you have made your bed now lie in it' so she went to George, and they put a down payment on some land in Ashburn Place, Gladesville, they built a small cabin to live in while they built their Californian Bungalow, where they had their three children and lived there till the early fifties when they moved to Collaroy." A photo appears of George with son Irving and freind Colin Rees and an unknown boy all dressed in the same style striped singlet tops and plain belted skirted bottoms [swimming costumes], most probably taken at Bilgola Beach. Irving was a Board Rider. Not long after the birth of Beryl in 1929 the Sydney Harbour Bridge was built over several years, on the opening day, George and Irene, with Beryl on her lap, Olga & Irving and their housemaid in their large touring car, waited for the flag to race across the bridge for all public cars after the official opening, George coveted the Honour of driving the first car across the bridge in 1932: Barrier Miner (Broken Hill, NSW : 1888-1954) < Saturday 16 April 1932 > Western Argus (Kalgoorlie, WA : 1916-1938) < Tuesday 19 April 1932 > The Queenslander (Brisbane, Qld. : 1866-1939) < Thursday 21 April 1932 > The Longreach Leader (Qld. :1923-1938) < Saturday 28 May 1932 > First Car Across Sydney Harbour Bridge. On the tick of midnight of March 19th, Mr George A. Cleland of Gladesvllle, Sydney, put his foot hard down on the accelerator of his Chrysler. With a long line of equally eager motorists behind him, he sped over a new highway-the Southern approach to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, just declared open, for traffic. By a safe margin, he achieved the unique honour of being the first member of the motoring public to cross that mighty steel span of Sydney's Harbour. For hours afterwards toll-collectors and the police had a tremendous task endeavouring to keep six long lines of, motor vehicles running smoothly. At one time, the queue on the city'side of the Harbour extended from the toll-house past the Sydney Town Hall. Cars on the northern side formed another queue that was at times almost a mile long. It is interesting to note that Mr. Cleland's car was shod with Perdriau Tyres-purely Australian products that, in their own field, are representative of the same spirit of Australian enterprise and achievement that visualised and finally completed the Bridge itself. Irene formed a good business as proprietress of the King Street Service station on the corner of King and Day Street's, Sydney. Under the Garage, on a lower level, George had his own business as an Electric Oxy Welder, they had a unique partnership and lasted till they retired, later they leased the Garage out, till the Service Station was later pulled down in the late sixties to make way for the western distributor link. George died at Tamworth Base Hospital, after several strokes, He was staying with his daughter Olga and son-in-law Clem on their Farm at "Echo Hills" Kootingal, near Tamworth with his wife Irene, convalescing after a recent stroke, he took ill, with yet another more crippling one, was placed in hospital where he died 10 days later on September 13th 1976. George was Cremated at Tamworth's New England Crematorium, and later Placed in a niche in the Garden Wall at Lincoln Grove Memorial Lawn Cemetery with a Plaque over it, Irene joined him by his side a year later in 1977." |
Daniel Hall was born the 4th child of 14 to David Hall, a foundryman and brass moulder at Hurst Colliery, and Mary Slater in Ashton-under-Lyne in 1824. In his son David (Poole) Hall's birth registration, his father's birthplace was given as Oldham, England, and the copy of Daniel's baptism certificate is from Ashton-under-Lyne, dated at age19, 18/10/1843. By the 1841 Census, the family (less Ann) were listed at Bengal, Hartshead, Ashton Under Lyne. David and John listed as moulders, Daniel, Samuel and William as piecers. Before emigration in 1844 on the Ship "Briton", 47 Daniel worked for James Mannock, blacksmith, Dukinfield. The family came to Australia as Bounty immigrants in 1844 with all but 2 eldest children, who had arrived with their uncle Moses in 1842. The ship was the "Briton" which arrived 26.6.1844 in Botany Bay. Daniel was described on the ship's list as a blacksmith. At emigration he had an agreement to work for Charles Abercrumbie of Five Dock, Sydney, for 12 months for rations and £12 p.a. as a farm labourer. Through his life in Australia he became a stonemason, a bricklayer, a "furnace builder", a foreman at Mort's Dock, a builder and a landlord. Unclaimed letters for a Daniel Hall were noted in the Government gazettes.1843 (Sydney GPO) 1843, 1859, 1860, 1861 (Balmain) Daniel married three times. He married Mary Poole in 1851, resulting in the birth of Edward James and David Poole. Daniel paid 5 pounds deposit for an assisted immigration passage to Australia for a Walter W Poole, age 32, in November 1855.It is unclear whether Walter emigrated or not. On Mary's early death he married Jane Fewell, in 1862, producing Alice May and Alfred Edward. Much later he married an Elizabeth Hall in Ashton-under-lyne on a return visit to England in 1892, aged about 68 as indicated on his death certificate of 1907. "If a Post Card photo is correct then he returned to Ashton-under-Lyne when much older, as the photo is marked with Ashton-under-Lyne on the reverse side of his photo. It would appear he met Elizabeth Hall there and they returned to Australia via Melbourne, were married and settled back into Balmain." It appears that Daniel Hall became insolvent in October 1860. And it appears that he spent some time in prison in 1863. "New South Wales, Australia, Gaol Description and Entrance Books, 1818-1930 No 2241 Name: Danl Hall Birth Year: abt 1824 Birth Place: Lancashire, England Age: 39 Immigration Date: 1844 Vessel Arrived In: Briton Religion: Protestant Trade: Mason Height: 5 foot 5 3/4 inches tall. He had been sentenced to 14 days hard labour for assaulting his wife Jane, according to Sydney newspapers. In 1863 Sands Directory has a Hall, Daniel, mason, Adolphus Lane, Balmain. In 1874 Daniel was living at Vincent Lane, Balmain. "Stolen, between the hours of 10 P.M. the 24th and 6 A.M. the 25th ultimo, from a clothes-line on the premises of Daniel Hall, stonemason, Vincent-lane, Balmain.-Two gray tweed shirts ; value, 15s. Identifiable." The Electoral Rolls 1873 - 1884/5 confirm Daniel Hall has a freehold house at Vincent Lane, Balmain.171 "Moses Slater, Gentleman, made his will on 25th August, 1876, indicating he has a house in Vincent St., Balmain and that he will leave it to Daniel Hall, his nephew (son of Mary and David Hall). He indicates that, after Daniel's death the house is to go to David Hall (Daniel's son) and to his heirs and assigns for ever. He appoints David Hall as the Executor of his will." "Probate was granted to David Hall of Balmain near Sydney, bricklayer, on 10th November, 1893. The estate was sworn at £200." Daniel's drive to prosper was illustrated by his building activity. According to the Leichardt Historical Journal Vol. 21, page 40, Daniel built at 7A Gladstone Street Balmain between 1857 and 1887, and lived there from 1857 to 1887."11.10 Detached house 7 A Gladstone Street (10) Between 1852 and 1857 Daniel Hall built the stone house on lot LB and lived there, as a bricklayer and stonemason, until 1887. His wife Mary gave birth to a son, Edward James, there on 7 January 1852; the child was baptised at St Mary's, Balmain, on 7 February .226 He advertised the house for sale on 29 September 1857: a four roomed cottage, with garden and well of water ... at present belonging to Daniel Hall; and also a piece of land ... with a frontage of 50 feet to Ann Street by a depth of 67 feet ... apply to Daniel Hall on the premises.227 Not listed in 1888-89, No 7A was the home of bricklayer David Hall in 1890-95. "Johann Friedrich was born in Steinhausen, Bockhorn, Grand Duchy of Oldenburg, in 1829. He was the son of Almuth Margaret & Christian Friedrich Hellmers, a Damask Weaver, they lived on a farming estate owned by the Hellmers since 1750 at Steinhausen in the Municipality of Bockhorn in the old Grand Duchy of Oldenburg - which later became Schleswig Holstein. He learnt the trade of Cabinet Making & later was noted to be a Master Cabinet Maker living in Hamburg in 1853. It seems there was a form of army conscription and Johann had moved to Hamburg to avoid being drafted into the army, he received a letter from his brother-in-law Johann Hopken, warning him if he was thinking of staying in Germany, he should front up around the 4th of April to the appropriate authority as announced in the public newspapers, and then the punishment won't be too hazardous. This led him to embrace the thought of leaving his homeland. He shortly after emigrated on the " Meteor " from Hamburg sailing to New South Wales, Australia in 1854 aged 25 to start a whole new life. He later met & married Elizabeth Crook the following year, on the twenty third of September 1855, at West Maitland, they were to have a long life together with a large family of 14 children & 36 grandchildren. Naturalization was granted in January 1860, and he took the Oath on the twenty second day of September 1862. David Hall was born in 1799 at Ashton-under-Lyne to John Hall, a farmer, and Martha Smith, the first of 7 children. He married Mary Slater in Manchester and together they had 13 children of their own. He was a foundryman, his son Daniel's baptism certificate giving his abode as Hurst, Aston-under-Lyne. In 1819 the residence of family was given as Botany, A-U-L. By 1820 he was living at Hurst as a Collier. By 1822 at Hurst as a Foundry Man.and by 1826 at Hurst as a Brass Moulder. By 1832 the address was Green Acres Moor, Brass Moulder. In 1841 Census the family (less Ann) were listed at Bengal, Hartshead, Ashton-Under-Lyne, with David and John as moulders, Daniel, Samuel and William as piecers. A description of the area where David Hall and Mary Slater lived in 1832 in Bengal Lane as written as a recollection in 1903 indicating the effect of the Mills on a once rural environment. Before emigration David worked for James Mannock, blacksmith, Dukinfield. A Pigot Directory of 1841 has 'Higgins and Mannock, Steam Engine Makers, Dukinfield' . Slater's Directory 1876 says "King St. Dukinfield". In the Immigration documents he was called a blacksmith ("can shoe horses"). The family ame to Australia as Bounty immigrants in 1844 with all but 2 eldestchildren, who had arrived with their uncle Moses in 1842. The Bounty Scheme ran from 1832 to 1845 and under this scheme recruiting agents in Britain were paid a bounty to find skilled labour and tradespeople whom they sponsored and shipped to N.S.W., later being reimbursed by the colonial government who financed the scheme with proceeds from land sales in the colony. The adult bounty in the Briton's case was Pounds 18/7/6 and the bounty for a child was Pounds 9/3/9. Details from microfilm: Ship -Briton- arrived 26.6.1844 Botany Bay 147 Contractor WM. Smith & Sons Surgeon Supt. Charles Carpenter Master : Hall David Blacksmith, Mary houseservant. Daniel blacksmith,Samuel labourer, David labourer. All protestant. David senior very deaf as a result of an accident 14 years ago, increased by cold. On the voyage David Senior was given charge of 3 young women until they were provided for in NSW. David had an agreement to work for James Clayton of Balmain as a blacksmith for 6 months for £1/5s. per week Entries for J. Clayton: 1861 Clayton, J. Blacksmith, George St., Balmain Clayton, J. 28 Elizabeth Place, Balmain 1863 Clayton, J. Blacksmith, George St., Balmain 1863 Hall, David Brass Moulder, Darling St., Balmain ) Could possibly be son David. 1864 Hall, David Brass Moulder, Darling St., Balmain )" Unclaimed letters in NSW Govt. Gazettes for a David Hall 1846, 1849. He Also signed a petition (Balmain) 1859. According to Grant Franklyn-Smith's research "The Hall family settled in Balmain not far from James Slater.[David's father-in-law] In fact as James Slater was building a house in 1844 on the site of 17 Duke Street, the Hall family probably lived next door in the house that James built. However I haven't located them next door though they were certainly in Balmain. There were no numbers to the houses in the early years. Next door to James house in Duke St. was "Dale Cottage" which members of the family occasionally I thought rented. Early days this cottage was owned by the Dales - "Mrs. Dale, Dressmaker" and son. James Hilton [David's brother-in-law] and family were living in it for a while (1869-1873) but by 1886 "Mrs. Wheeler" has it. I guess there is nothing to say that James didn't build the house but I don't think he owned it. All records from 1888 record the house they own as 19 Duke St. James Slater left it to his daughter Esther, who left it to her daughter-in law, Jane Hilton. There was no disposal of a second house in the wills. Jane paid the rates for 19 Duke St. in 1908 according to the Balmain rate books but by 1919 the street numbering has changed and she now pays the rates for 17 Duke St." Electoral rolls have a David Hall freehold Balmain in 1853-54. It seems that David Hall rapidly became a landowner and builder in Balmain, buying land lots in the "Waterview Estate". He bought and built in Darling Street, Balmain, according to the Leichardt Historical Journal, in 1845, 1860 and 1861. Obviously a reputable character he and Moses Slater [a brother-in-law] were named as trustees for other property. David died in 1882, aged 83, at Darling St., Balmain of "senile marasmus" He was buried at Balmain cemetery on 13 July 1882, 2 months after his wife Mary. The headstone of David and Mary was moved to St. Stephen's cemetery in Newtown in 1942 at the conversion of Balmain cemetery to a park. Son James was also on the same headstone. "Prior to the conversion and preparation of the cemetery as a park, Leichhardt Council advertised its intentions to remove the headstones and grave enclosures. Relatives of the people buried in the cemetery were given time to arrange reinterment. " according to the Leichardt Council. Only 14 headstones were removed to Camperdown, so the family must have paid for this. Sydney Morning Herald: Funerals p.12 "The friends of the late Mr. David Hall are respectfully invited to attend his funeral; to move from his late residence, Darling St. Balmain tomorrow (Thursday) morning at nine o'clock, and proceed to Balmain cemetery. A FULL DESCRIPTION OF THIS FAMILY IS CONTAINED IN SOURCE 346AND SOURCE 347 : The "Descendants of Joseph Crook" research by Grant Franklyn-Smith is the best reference for this family line.
Henry's father, Joseph Crook, deserted the British army, was court martialled with a sentence of life, and transported in 1807 to Australia on the 'Duke of Portland' and his family came on the accompanying ship 'Young William'. "It is noted on the Reel 722...4/2151.2 at St Philips, Sydney that Henry was married by consent of the Governor to Miss Mary Foley a "Bonded" Irish girl aged 21, he being 35, this would mean he was born around 1797, and came out to Australia a free settler, on the Ship "Young William" in 1809, this would make him Abt 12 yrs old. Henry is noted to have been re-baptised as an adult, this would be due to his wife being a catholic and he a protestant, so he was baptised in the faith of Roman Catholic. 16 August 1843 Henry re-baptised [Henry Patrick] Aged 46, West Maitland Catholic Church, N.S.W. The only death certificate I can find at this point is a Henry Crook ,died 7th July 1886, in Parramatta with no details. Given a Paupers Grave""On his death registration he is noted as being buried in the Roman Catholic Section Rookwood, Rookwood Cemetery has no details of his burial, the office stating that if he was given a paupers grave and given the period, no details were kept" Colonial Secretary Index, 1788-1825 CROOK, Henry 1821 Sep 8 Carpenter. Mary FOLEY, daughter of Patrick FOLEY, was born in 1807 in Limerick, Ireland.47 She was a Convict. Maid. She was R.C.7 She died on 26 Jun 1898 in Newington Asylum, Sydney. Reg. no. 5554. Senile marasmus. Exhaustion. Grave No: 2004, Section 0, Grave no 236, Old Catholic Cemetery, Rookwood. Mary was buried on 28 Jun 1898 in Rookwood cemetery. R.C. section. No record on S.A.G.Rookwood transcriptions. |

Notes from Grant Franklyn-Smith: "Mary Crook, wife of Henry Crook ,was born between 1807-1811 in Limerick, Ireland. Mary Foley was sentenced 7 years at Limerick, on the 7th day of March, 1827 for stealing clothes. She was a nurse girl ( or maid ) aged Abt 20 years old of Roman Catholic Religion, single and could not read or write. She had no former convictions, and her native place of abode was Limerick. Described as being 5 feet 1/2 inch tall. Ruddy fair complexion , light brown hair, hazel eyes, a small perpendicular scar at inner part of her left eyebrow. "IF" on upper part of right arm (probably a birthmark or tattoo). She wasn't transported till four years after her conviction, it is not known where she spent this time, but was finally transported to Australia on the Ship "Palambam" , which left Cork on 23rd March, 1831 arriving in Sydney on 31st July 1831.The Master of the ship was Geo Willis and the accompanying Surgeon Superintendent was James Osborne ( State Archives Micro Film No 698/3 ) From Convict Films 317-331 Indent No 112 State Archives. On arrival in Sydney she was sent to work for a Mr Jas. Rufsell. It's later noted on the Catholic Church Reel of St Mary, ( Reel no 722 4/2151..4..of 1832), William Baker aged 20 "BONDED" who arrived on the ship "Champion" in 1827, and applied to marry Mary Foley aged 20 . Obviously this did not take place as later noted , at St Philip's Church, Sydney, ( Reel 722...4/2151.2 of 1832) , Application of marriage, with Governor's Consent to Marry,( They had to receive the Governors consent , as she was still on bond for a few more years, Convict permission to marry No 74 State Archives ) ,Mary Foley ,aged 21 "BONDED" , arrived on the ship , "Palambam" in 1831, to Henry Crook, aged 35 yrs, a free , new settler, from Great Britain arrived on the Ship " Young William " in 1809, they were wed on the 24th March 1832, at St Philips Sydney. Mary received her Certificate of Freedom No 34/1116. Dated 9th September 1834. It is noted on the 14th October 1856, she attended the birth of her granddaughter, Margaret Hellmers, helping her daughter Elizabeth during Labor, at Maitland. She lived in Maitland from 1838 to 1870. Noted that the Marriage of her son Joseph Henry Crook and Ann Kirkwood took place at the residence of Mrs Mary Crook of Horse Shoe Bend, West Maitland in 1863. Mary is noted as the witness [signing her name with a cross] at the wedding of her son Henry Crook, to Selina Sexton on the 1st August 1870, West Maitland. Mary is noted as Mary Crook, Midwife of West Maitland, attending her daughter-in-law Selina Crook during her birth of her son Robert Henry Crook dated 31st August 1870. "After having a large family and living in Maitland from around 1837, Mary is noted to be still living in Maitland as late as the 1st August 1870, at the wedding of Henry Crook to Selina Sexton, Mary is noted as being a witness signing her name with a cross as her mark Mary X Crook. The family started to appear in the Redfern area, with daughter Elizabeth Hellmers in Sydney c1858, John and family were in Redfern by 1867, as were William's family in 1868, followed later by Henry and Selina also settling in the Redfern area with their son Robert who wed in Redfern in 1878. I would say that at a guess Mary finally traveled down to live in Sydney with her sons after 1870, after the marriage of Henry jr, living another 28 years around her children, at least 34 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren that had been born before her death in 1898, including my grandmother Irene Mary Hall who was born in 1895. Mary would spend her last years in Newington Asylum, Sydney, passing away on the 26 June 1898". Henry probably died Abt 1886. Mary died at Newington Asylum for Old Woman on the 26th June ,1898 aged 88 years old of Senile Marasmus and Exhaustion and was buried in Rookwood ,Roman Catholic Section on 28th June 1898. Leaving only four surviving children Joseph, Elizabeth, John and William."
There is some uncertainty about Mary's age as there is a baptism for mary Foley on 31st december 1806 at St. Michael's in Limerick City to a Cornelius Foley and Ellen Hushen. However she stated her father's name as Patrick7,10,47.

John Hall (John Booth Hall according to source 421) was born around 1778, in Ashton-under-Lyne to Abraham Hall and Sarah Booth. In 1797 he married Martha Smith in Ashton-under-Lyne. They had 7 children all born in Ashton-under-Lyne. John was a farmer at Smallshaw.Occupation from David Hall's death cert. "The ancestors of John Hall can be traced back to the 1500's," and some of the towns they lived and worked in were Mossley, Ashton under Lyne, Saddleworth and Botany.".The family possibly moved to Hurst from Smallshaw as son David was living at Hurst in the 1820's (at the birth of his children). Pigot's Directory 1828-29 has a John Hall as a brickmaker (fire and tile) Dukinfield. Most farmers in the early 1800s were weaving at home what they raised on their small holdings. Home based industry gradually gave way to the more efficient mills as the industrial revolution progressed. The Slater and Mayall families changed from farmers to weavers and this is possibly what happened to the Halls too. As this is the earliest of the Halls on who we have much reliable information, and noting his uncertain parentage, it will be worth reading Grant Franklyn-Smith's PDF report from 2018, "Descendants of John Hall"4,25,68,69.

James Slater was born in 1778 and baptised in Ashton-under-Lyne. He married Mary Mayall in 1797 at Manchester and they produced 11 children. James died in 1862 in Sydney after Mary's death in 1847. This summary is from the file 'James Slater and Mary Mayall' written by Virginia Stokes, updated in 2004. "James Slater who came to Sydney aboard The Surry on 28 July 1814. In the convict indent James Slater is described as Age- 33, Occupation- engineer and cotton manufacturer, Hair- black, Complexion- ruddy, Eyes- brown. Height- 5'6". James in his early days of residence in Sydney made significant contributions towards the development of the cotton industry. Before he was imprisoned for stealing a weaver's sack he worked in a cotton mill in Manchester as an engineer and had the knowledge to make the first steam power driven carding machine, spinning jennies and looms in Australia. James would have been freed after serving 7 years as a convict. He lived in Sydney for some time, later moving to Balmain in 1843 where he bought a weatherboard cottage which stood on Lot 18, Duke Street. James Slater was born in Lancashire about 1778 and married Mary Mayall in 1797 at the Cathedral in Manchester. James' father, Daniel was the clerk in the Anglican church at Ashton Under Lyne. His signature is found on many marriage certificates between 1803 and 1834." "On 20 January 1813 James Slater was tried at Lancaster Quarter Sessions and found "guilty of stealing one twilled sack, at Ashton Under Line, the property of Samuel Howard." He was imprisoned in Lancaster Castle which is still used as a prison. The family was split up amongst various relatives, some quite wealthy. It is possible that young Mary Slater (Mary Porter's grandmother) went to live with her father's parents Daniel Slater and Mary Stanfield as the name Stanfield (see Stanfield Holliday) was used as a Christian name in subsequent generations." "1844. Two years previously, James Slater's youngest son Moses had migrated to Sydney and immediately went to work in Kent Street, Sydney for his father whose main occupation was doing carpentry. The Hall family settled in Balmain not far from James Slater. In fact as James Slater was building a house in 1844 on the site of 17 Duke Street, the Hall family probably lived next door in the house that James built." However " I haven't located them next door though they were certainly in Balmain. There were no numbers to the houses in the early years. Next door to James house in Duke St. was "Dale Cottage" which members of the family occasionally I thought rented. Early days this cottage was owned by the Dales - "Mrs. Dale, Dressmaker" and son. James Hilton and family were living in it for a while (1869-1873) but by 1886 "Mrs. Jane paid the rates for 19 Duke St. in 1908 according to the Balmain rate books but by 1919 the street numbering has changed and she now pays the rates for 17 Duke St." "James Slater died of old age in 1862. He had at least two defacto wives whilst living in New South Wales. One of these also called Mary was the informant on James' death certificate. However, he left his house to his daughter Esther Hilton, a widow whose passage to Sydney had been paid by her sister Mary Hall. (Mary Porter's mother). Esther came to Sydney in 1854 accompanied by her adult children, Martha and James and three children by the name of Pickering, the offspring of her deceased sister Miriam."
This information is from the James Slater Ry file by Joyce Gardiner. It gives a timeline of his life and tries to make sense of the information available.
"Marriage to Mary Mayall was by Banns, Sept. 3rd, 10th and 17th - 26th September 1797, at Manchester Cathedral. James shown as of the Parish of Town of Manchester, weaver and Mary Mayall of New Munster. Mary signed with an X. Witnesses ? Harrison and Henry Aspinall. 1807 at christening of Daniel, recorded at Lane Head, weaver. Marianne bpt 1820 Father James Slater and Mother Mary probably does not belong to this family as James was in NSW by 1814 though other members of the family were baptised long after he was gone. There is no Marianne listed in James d/c though there is a Marian listed as living with no birth date. Only two children are listed as living after Moses, Marian and Maria, and it is thought that that Marian is Miriam who died in 1840. Though why was she listed as living? Convict: Trial occurred at Lancashire Quarter Sessions on 20.1.1813. 1813 January 30th, Wheeler's Manchester Chronicle, Saturday, p.4. At the quarter sessions held at the new Bayley Court House in Salford, James Slater was sentenced to be transported for seven years for stealing a sack at Ashton-under-Lyne. This Court doth therefore order and adjudge that the said James Slater shall be sent and transported to some part beyond the seas for the space of seven years next pursuant to the Statute in such care made and provided." "Like order for Pounds 47/19/- payable to Mr. John Meine (or Milne?) the costs he has been put unto in the prosecution of James Robinson, William James, William Williamson, James Robinson, James Slater, Andrew Indle and Thomas Pritchard and Benjamin Duckworth at this session for felony for doing the same." A Calendar of the Crown prisoners confined in His Majesty's gaol, the Castle of Lancaster the Saturday 20th March 1813. James Slater is listed under convicts to be transported for seven years. (This means that he was transferred from New Bailey Gaol after sentencing to Lancaster Castle Gaol waiting for transportation). Information 3/12/02 Lancaster Castle Project Team. "James Slater was indeed held as a prisoner at Lancaster Castle, following his conviction at Salford Quarter Sessions in January 1813. Lancaster was the principal gaol for the county of Lancashire at the time, and it would be normal practice for him to be sent here after conviction, to await his removal. I think it unlikely that he would have remained here until February the following year - the normal practice would have been to remove him to the Hulks, where he would have been put to hard labour, until he was assigned to a transport. Unfortunately our Removal Orders for the period 1811-15 are few and I have been unable to ascertain the date he was removed from the Castle - our sole reference to him is in a copy of the gaol delivery which you have already found." 1814 February 22nd Sailed from England in the Convict Ship "Surry" arriving Sydney 28 July,1814. It was a first class 2 decker built in Harwick in 1811. Carrying 200 male convicts, left England 22/2/1814 and travelled via Rio. March 7 the first well-defined case of typhus made its appearance. 156 days from England when she arrived in Port Jackson her death-toll stood at 51 - 36 convicts, her master, the first and second mates, the boatswain, six seamen, the surgeon and four soldiers. Ships Master : James Paterson. For full details of voyage see item under Surry in Works. On the trip to NSW the ship had a detachment of the 46th Regiment (South Devonshire) aboard which was to be used guarding against aborigines, escaped convicts and bushrangers in the Sydney and Newcastle area. Inf. Ian Brothers, 2002 "Broxbornebury" 1814 Jeffrey Hart Bent, sent from England to become the Colony's first Supreme Court Judge and carrying the Charter of Justice, wrote a private account of the voyage (206 pages) N.L.A., Canberra ref. mfm 24752. Material in this diary relates to "Surry" 1814 which left England at the same time as "Broxbornebury". The latter ship had wives and children of some of the "Surry" convicts. "Log of Logs" Vol 1 by Ian Hawkins Nicholson gives two refs for "Broxbornebury" inf from the Nat.Lib -MS 195 and FM 3/21 Shipping documents - Convict Ships, Surrey, Fiche 634, p. 541: Native Place - Lancashire. Occupation - Engineer and Cotton Manufacturer. Age - 33. Height 5'6". Complexion - Ruddy. Hair - Black. Eyes - Brown. Disposed of to John Allen on arrival. On the left of the above fiche is the number 2407 which could refer to a T/L or Pardon (Some discrepancy in age - 26 years in the Calendar of Prisoners, 33 years in shipping documents. If death certificate to be believed (85 in 1862) he'd have been about 36 years) North Head Quarantine Station. The first known use of North Head as a quarantine site was in August 1828 with the detaining of the convict ship Bussorah Merchant when a number of crew became infected with smallpox...it remained in operation until the early 1980s. During its life 58- ships were detained at North Head and more than 13,000 people were quarantined.
1814, 9th March daughters Miriam (born 20/5/1810) and Maria (born 20/6/1812) are baptised at St. Michael's, Ashton-under-Lyne. Abode is given as Botany and Father's trade is a weaver.

However, about this time Simeon Lord had a woollen mill in Sydney and it is possible James' talent as a weaver (cotton engineer) was put to use there. No Ticket of Leave found for James Slater but there is one for John Slater Surry 1814 Life Carpenter Sydney No. 40385. Check this. 1815, 24th or 29th September, Moses Slater is baptised at St. Michael's, Ashton-under-Lyne, with the abode given as Botany and the father's trade as weaver. Carpenter. Information given by wife Mary. (?) (First wife Mary supposed to have died 1847?). 1862 March 24. Buried Camperdown Cemetery. 50 years in Australia. Children listed as Sarah 65, Mary 62, Ann 60, Esther 58, Miles 56 (all living), Daniel died at the age of 3 yrs., Moses 50, Marion and Maria all living. (No age given for Marian and Maria - Miriam not listed - mother of James Pickering who gave James Slater as his grandfather and indicated that his mother was dead in his Shipping docs. (4 Pounds Remittance Reg. paid by Aunt Mrs. Mary Hall. Grandfather Slater builder in Balmain). Was second (?) wife Mary unfamiliar with Marian and Maria. A Marianne was christened 4/2/1820 Bolton, St. Peter. James Slater in Sydney by 1812 or 1814. Miriam and Maria were christened after his departure but what about Marianne. No J. Slater in passenger departures from Australia in 1819 (convict's term would have been served 1819). Passenger and Crew departures checked Jan. 5, 1819 - Dec. 1819. The above Moses would have been born in 1812 but was not baptised until 24/9/1815. Perhaps Marianne had a late baptism or perhaps she does not belong to this family. Baptismal records for St. Michael's, Ashton-under-Lyne indicate that Miriam and Maria were christened 9th March, 1814 but that Miriam was born on 20th May, 1810 and Maria on 20th June, 1812, prior to his conviction in 1813. The baptism record gives his trade as weaver and his abode as Botany. Botany is part of Ashton where Esther Hilton was living at the birth of her daughter Maria in 1824. Could wife Mary have been living in Botany with the family once James was transported? Perhaps the children were scattered to various relatives. Sands Sydney and NSW Directory, 1858-9 and 1861 James Slater Duke St., Balmain James Slater's will dated 30.1.1858 gives his address as Duke St., Balmain. I think it is possible that his daughter Esther Hilton was looking after him at this stage (and his wife Mary?) because he left all he had to her (Esther). Probate was granted 4.8.1863 to the value of 10 Pounds. Daughter Esther Hilton was executrix and sole beneficiary. Esther lived at Duke St., and on her death bequeathed the house to her daughter-in-law Jane Agnes Hilton (nee Tucker) wife of her son James. 1882 In daughter Mary Hall's d/c James' Occupation is given as Pile Driver." James Slater was buried in Camperdown Cemetery and his grave is next to various members of the Spence family58,59,63,71.

Mary MAYALL,26 daughter of Thomas MAYALL and Mary ANDREW, was born in 1776 in Saddleworth, yorkshire, England.61 She was baptised on 11 Jun 1776 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire, England.61 73 She died on 17 Jul 1847 in Balmain.61 58 73 V18471187 32B/1847. Mary was buried on 19 Jul 1847 in Old Burial Ground, later reinterred at Bunnerong.58 73 |
|
Her surname is according to daughter Mary's death cert. Mary Slater was living at Katharine Street, Ashton Under Lyne at the 1841 census. She was then described as a housekeeper, aged 60. Also in the household were Moses Slater, 30, Boot Maker; James Pickering, 25, Spinn?, Maria Pickering, 11, Labourer;James Pickering, 5; Mary PIckering, 2. Also James Walker, 25 and Ann Walker, 20, occupations unreadable. All household born in Lancashire except James Walker. "The convict's wife, Mary Slater only lived for three years in the colony. She died in Balmain on 17 July 1847, just two months before the couple's 50th wedding anniversary, aged 71 and was buried at the Old Burial Ground and later reinterred at Bunnerong cemetery with the husband of her eldest daughter, Sarah Bradford. There is some speculation that Sarah may also have been a convict but so far no death certificate can be found to verify that." The Slaters and the Mayalls were farmers and weavers for many centuries in England and embraced the new industrial technology of the 1800s. The ancestors of Mary Mayall can be traced back to the 1500s. Some of the towns they lived and worked in were Mossley, Ashton Under Lyne, Saddleworth and Botany. These towns were located in the Pennines on the border of Yorkshire and Lancashire. I have recently been in contact with the wife of a descendant of the Hall family who still lives in Ashton Under Lyne. Some of the Mayalls became quite wealthy and one branch of the family established the first cotton mill in the USA. There is quite an interesting story attached to that and they still celebrate Mayall Day in Maine USA."
Research by Joyce Gardner: "Mary Mayall confirmed as mother of Esther Hilton on her d/c but Mary's baptism, place and date and identification of parents are a conjecture. (IGI). There is a burial recorded in the St.Michael's, Ashton-under-Lyne for a Mary Slater of the town, on 29th November,1840, 63 years. (1840, 2341) However, the entry in the burial register doesn't say "wife of" and descendants of her daughter Mary Hall say that Mary came to NSW with the Hall family in 1844. Mary was alive in 1844 on migration of daughter Mary Hall to N.S.W. Listed as unassisted arrival 26/6/1844 per Briton from Liverpool. (Archive Reel 1271 - sheet listing Mary's name p. 157 Report of a Barque arrived in Port Jackson, this 26 day of June, 1844.). Report of the Barque Briton arriving Port Jackson 26 June, 1844 Tonnage 776 Master's Name: Hale From whence: Liverpool When sailed: 15 March Lading: Merchandise Agent: A. Smith Steerage Passengers: 9 including Mary Slater Daughter Mary Hall and family also travelled as bounty passengers on the same ship. Leonie Stanley and Marianne McGowan say she only lived a few years in the colony. Death of a Mary Slater Entry No. 792, Vol. No. 32. Slater, Mary Abode: Balmain. Died 17/7/1847. Buried 19/7/1847. Age: 71 yrs. Status: Married. By whom ceremony performed: Rev. J.G. Grylls. (Is this our Mary?) The above Mary was removed from the Old Burial Ground when it became the proposed site for the Central Railway Station. According to Glenn Bradford the exhumation was obtained by her daughter Sarah Bradford and she was re-interred at Bunnerong Cemetery with Sarah's husband John Bradford. Monumental Inscriptions at Bunnerong: 639 Mary Slater died 17th July 1847 aged 71 years. also John Bradford died 9th September 1847 aged 52 years. (Upright/fair) (Ref. 305 Bunn 4S/87 Bradford and Slater) John Bradford would have been born c.1795 There is no proof that this Mary Slater is the wife of James Slater, though from family stories it appears likely. It is difficult to prove that the wife of John Bradford is Sarah, the daughter of Mary and James Slater. Check further for a death of this Sarah and her parents may be listed. No death of Sarah Bradford can be found but she may have remarrried. Marriages of Sarah Bradford to Charles King, Cecil Pearson and Marshall F. Green (1899-1918) would be too old. 1. There is a Sarah Slater daughter of James Slater listed in the "1825 General Muster of N.S.W. of all Inhabitants Arranged Alphabetically". James is shown as Free by Servitude, arr. Surry 1814, sentence 7 years, cabinet maker, Parramatta with a wife Catherine and two daughters and a son. However on checking the "1822 General Muster and Land and Stock Muster Lists" this Catherine and children (Samuel, Sarah and Elizabeth) who arrived on the Providence in 1822, belong to John Slater who arrived on the Larkin with a life sentence. His occupation in 1822 is given as Constable residing at Parramatta. It seems the details have been mixed up as there is no mention of Catherine and the children belonging to James in 1828. 2. In the 1828 census James Slater and Sarah Slater are bracketed as a family. Sarah is 33 years of age in 1828 (b.c.1795) which means she was born before the marriage of Mary Mayall and James Slater. Their first Sarah was bpt. in 1797 and their second Sarah was bpt. in 1798. Sarah is shown as 65 in the d/c of James in 1862 (b.c.1797). Appendix 1 of the Census indicates the Sarah was recorded as Sarah Blendy in the original PRO and AONSW vols which seems to indicate that rather than a daughter she is probably shacked up with James and has adopted the Slater name. Sarah Blandy arrived on the Minstrel 25/10/1812 (sentenced at Middlesex to 7 years). 3. Another Sarah Slater arrived on the Minstrel who was sentenced at Middlesex for life on 15/1/1812. Glen Bradford suggests that John Bradford arrived as a convict on the Minerva on 16 December 1821. 4. Esther Davison paid for Sarah Slater (widow) and her daughter and children to come to NSW on the Fitzjames in 1860. She was aged 51 at that time (b.c.1809) so she was probably not her sister but some other relation. Esther's brother Miles was alive in 1862 so Sarah was not his widow and Moses Slater never married. John Bradford had died in 1847 so it is unlikely that Sarah was his widow who had reverted to her maiden name. Could she have come to NSW ahead of the family - perhaps as the convict in 1821? 5. There were no Sarah Slater's arriving in Sydney 1844-1859 or Port Phillip 1839-1851. 6. No death for Sarah Bradford, 1788-1888. No death John Bradford Pioneer Index. 7. The "Descendants of Joseph Crook" research by Grant Franklyn-Smith is the best reference for this family line.
Joseph Crook was born in Hampshire around 1760 and married Elizabeth Bridgens in London in 1788. They produced 7 children before his Transportation to Australia as a convict, and he died in Sydney in 1828. Joseph Crook deserted the British army, was court- martialled with a sentence of life, and transported in 1807 to Australia on the 'Duke of Portland' and his family came on the accompanying ship 'Young William'. "The "Duke of Portland", a convict ship of 192 male prisoners, sailed in the company of the store ship "Young William", carrying Cargo, New Settlers and Visitors and a Regiment of Soldiers, Joseph's family had been able to secure passage on the "Young William" to come to Australia and be close to husband andfather Joseph. They included his wife Elizabeth, sons Joseph, John and Henry, and daughters Elizabeth Margaret, Sarah, and Emma. "The "Duke of Portland", a convict ship of male prisoners, sailed in the company of the storeship "Young William", carrying Cargo, New Settlers and Visitors and a regiment of Soldiers, Joseph's family had been able to secure passage on the Young William to come to Australia and be close to husband/father Joseph. " "I have searched the Indian East India Birth marriage and burials and found a Joseph of the correct age and his two wives [confirming Gary Crooks notes] and children and grandchildren, and also his mother Elizabeth also of correct age who must have travelled to India on the death of Joseph after 1828 and settled there with her son Joseph, she died in 1841 in Calcutta, which explains no death registration in NSW of an Elizabeth Crook. Christian Friedrich HELLMERS, son of UNNAMED, was born c. 1712 in Dotlingen/Oldenburg , Lower Saxony.46 80 He married Almut BRUNKEN on 29 Oct 1750 in Steinhausen.46 He died on 4 Jan 1763 in Steinhausen, Bockhorn, Oldenburg, Germany.46 51 51 Drowning. |
|
An extensive history of the Hellmers family can be found in Grant Franklyn-Smith's research document PDF "Descendants of Christian Von Hellmers".
The oldest "Hellmers" research has found, done by Mrs Helga Sieghold (nee Hellmers), was Christian Hellmers who came from the town Dotlingen, near the city of Oldenburg. He came to Steinhausen and married into the Brunken Family Estate, the family living on the farm at the time had no male heirs, and since that time it has belonged to the Hellmers Family. Except for more recent times all first borne males bore the christian names of Christian Friedrich. Christian Hellmers who was born in Dotlingen, in the Duchy of Oldenburg, south of the city of Oldenburg, he came to Steinhausen area or Bockhorn, and is known as a 'Prince ' and noted as Graf von Hellmers, or Count Christian Von Hellmers, Graf in German is Count, it is not certain yet how he obtained the title, but it was a title he could not hand down to his wife and children, he worked the land and reclaimed a large amount from the coast, by bagging and making dykes of sorts, for farming, he was about 51 when tides broke the dykes and he died drowning while trying to save his land, in 1763. Helga pointed out that we have written down that the Hellmers were in Scwislwig-Holstein, this is incorrect , Steinhausen is in the municipality of Bockhorn, Lower Saxony, or Niedersachsen, , this area was a Duchy of Oldenburg, and for over two hundred years or so it was ruled by the Danes, princes of Denmark who later became kings of Denmark, so this would possibly mean Christian was made a count by the Danish rulers of the time. "He was known as a Prince [of sorts] a Land Graf - Christian, Graf Von Hellmers, or Count Von Hellmers, this title was bestowed upon him by unknown means, and is still to be researched. This title not being a hereditary title, could not be passed down to his children and grandchildren. Christian came to the area, and reclaimed the flat area between Bockhorn and the bay of Jadebusen, part of the North Sea, by creating dykes to keep the water retained, unfortunately he later died by drowning while defending his land when large tides surfaced over the dykes, he was only 51 years old, the tides abated and the lands became farming areas they are today."
History of the Area of Oldenburg, where Steinhausen is located. County of Oldenburg from the 1100's - 1777. Duchy of Oldenburg 1777 - 1815. Grand Duchy of Oldenburg 1815 - 1918. In 1918 all three enclaves of the former Grand Duchy became a Free State of the Weimar Republic. The Nazi Party took power in the Free State in the 1932 elections. In 1937, Lubeck and Birkenfeld passed to Prussia. In 1946, Oldenburg was incorporated into Lower Saxony [Niedersachsen]. A more extensive history of GRAND DUCHY OF OLDENBURG is located in source 423, "Descendants of Christian Von Hellmers".7,51,80 |

Sarah lived on the farm that was attached to what is an Inn now called the Colliers Arms, Broadcar Lane, Hartshead. “A Directory of Ashton Pubs and their Licensees”, by Rob Magee, pub. Neil Richardson 1989 states: “It is not known just when the Colliers was first licensed – it appears in the records in 1857, when William Kenworthy kept the farmhouse-type pub near Hartshead Pike. In a police report of 1890 the pub was described as having no beds for travellers, but could provide refreshment other than drink for up to six persons. There was a stable and the two nearest public houses were 1,000 and 1,320 yards away.” The Pub has changed little in the last 100 years and still displays its old slate roof.16 |
