Jacob HORT was born on 1 Apr 1831 in Woflinswil, Switzerland.^{1 2 2} He was a Farmer, silk ribbon weaver,Shoemaker.² He was Roman Catholic.² He married Euphrosina SCHAFFNER on 19 May 1856 in Roman Catholic Church, Woflinswil, Switzerland. He died on 25 Jan 1900 in Cambridge Rd., Kingwilliamstown.^{1 2}

"While possibly working as a farmhand near Anwil BL, he met Euphrosine" Although Euphrosine was a roman member of the Reformed Church, , they married at the Roman Catholic Church in Woflinswil. "In 1858 the couple moved from Anwil to the

neighbouring Rothenfluh BL where they bought the small farmstead Dubach, north-east of the village. Here in the Reformed Church they had seven children baptised." On 15 Feb 1867 they sold their property and Jakob became employed as a silk

ribbonweaver.In 1876 they took the opportunity to migrate to South Africa. "They arrived in East London with six children and settled in King William's Town where Jakob worked as a shoemaker".
