James Slater was born in 1778 and baptised in Ashton-under-Lyne. He married Mary Mayall in 1797 at Manchester and they produced 11 children. James died in 1862 in Sydney after Mary's death in 1847. This summary is from the file 'James Slater and Mary Mayall' written by Virginia Stokes, updated in 2004. "James Slater who came to Sydney aboard The Surry on 28 July 1814. In the convict indent James Slater is described as Age- 33, Occupation- engineer and cotton manufacturer, Hair- black, Complexion- ruddy, Eyes- brown. Height- 5'6". James in his early days of residence in Sydney made significant contributions towards the development of the cotton industry. Before he was imprisoned for stealing a weaver's sack he worked in a cotton mill in Manchester as an engineer and had the knowledge to make the first steam power driven carding machine, spinning jennies and looms in Australia. James would have been freed after serving 7 years as a convict. He lived in Sydney for some time, later moving to Balmain in 1843 where he bought a weatherboard cottage which stood on Lot 18, Duke Street. James Slater was born in Lancashire about 1778 and married Mary Mayall in 1797 at the Cathedral in Manchester. James' father, Daniel was the clerk in the Anglican church at Ashton Under Lyne. His signature is found on many marriage certificates between 1803 and 1834." "On 20 January 1813 James Slater was tried at Lancaster Quarter Sessions and found "guilty of stealing one twilled sack, at Ashton Under Line, the property of Samuel Howard." He was imprisoned in Lancaster Castle which is still used as a prison. The family was split up amongst various relatives, some quite wealthy. It is possible that young Mary Slater (Mary Porter's grandmother) went to live with her father's parents Daniel Slater and Mary Stanfield as the name Stanfield (see Stanfield Holliday) was used as a Christian name in subsequent generations." "1844. Two years previously, James Slater's youngest son Moses had migrated to Sydney and immediately went to work in Kent Street, Sydney for his father whose main occupation was doing carpentry. The Hall family settled in Balmain not far from James Slater. In fact as James Slater was building a house in 1844 on the site of 17 Duke Street, the Hall family probably lived next door in the house that James built." However " I haven't located them next door though they were certainly in Balmain. There were no numbers to the houses in the early years. Next door to James house in Duke St. was "Dale Cottage" which members of the family occasionally I thought rented. Early days this cottage was owned by the Dales - "Mrs. Dale, Dressmaker" and son. James Hilton and family were living in it for a while (1869-1873) but by 1886 "Mrs. Wheeler" has it. I guess there is nothing to say that James didn't build the house but I don't think he owned it. All records from 1888 record the house they own as 19 Duke St. James Slater left it to his daughter Esther, who left it to her daughter-in law, Jane Hilton. There was no disposal of a second house in the wills. Jane paid the rates for 19 Duke St. in 1908 according to the Balmain rate books but by 1919 the street numbering has changed and she now pays the rates for 17 Duke St." "James Slater died of old age in 1862. He had at least two defacto wives whilst living in New South Wales. One of these also called Mary was the informant on James' death certificate. However, he left his house to his daughter Esther Hilton, a widow whose passage to Sydney had been paid by her sister Mary Hall. (Mary Porter's mother). Esther came to Sydney in 1854 accompanied by her adult children, Martha and James and three children by the name of Pickering, the offspring of her deceased sister Miriam."
This information is from the James Slater Ry file by Joyce Gardiner. It gives a timeline of his life and tries to make sense of the information available.
"Marriage to Mary Mayall was by Banns, Sept. 3rd, 10th and 17th - 26th September 1797, at Manchester Cathedral. James shown as of the Parish of Town of Manchester, weaver and Mary Mayall of New Munster. Mary signed with an X. Witnesses ? Harrison and Henry Aspinall. 1807 at christening of Daniel, recorded at Lane Head, weaver. Marianne bpt 1820 Father James Slater and Mother Mary probably does not belong to this family as James was in NSW by 1814 though other members of the family were baptised long after he was gone. There is no Marianne listed in James d/c though there is a Marian listed as living with no birth date. Only two children are listed as living after Moses, Marian and Maria, and it is thought that that Marian is Miriam who died in 1840. Though why was she listed as living? Convict: Trial occurred at Lancashire Quarter Sessions on 20.1.1813. 1813 January 30th, Wheeler's Manchester Chronicle, Saturday, p.4. At the quarter sessions held at the new Bayley Court House in Salford, James Slater was sentenced to be transported for seven years for stealing a sack at Ashton-under-Lyne. Calendar of all the Prisoners in the New Bailey Prison at Salford Manchester this 20th day of January 1813. No. 73 James Slater 26 years By whom and when committed: R. Wright Esq 7th Jan. This Court doth therefore order and adjudge that the said James Slater shall be sent and transported to some part beyond the seas for the space of seven years next pursuant to the Statute in such care made and provided." "Like order for Pounds 47/19/- payable to Mr. John Meine (or Milne?) the costs he has been put unto in the prosecution of James Robinson, William James, William Williamson, James Robinson, James Slater, Andrew Indle and Thomas Pritchard and Benjamin Duckworth at this session for felony for doing the same." A Calendar of the Crown prisoners confined in His Majesty's gaol, the Castle of Lancaster the Saturday 20th March 1813. James Slater is listed under convicts to be transported for seven years. (This means that he was transferred from New Bailey Gaol after sentencing to Lancaster Castle Gaol waiting for transportation). Information 3/12/02 Lancaster Castle Project Team. "James Slater was indeed held as a prisoner at Lancaster Castle, following his conviction at Salford Quarter Sessions in January 1813. Lancaster was the principal gaol for the county of Lancashire at the time, and it would be normal practice for him to be sent here after conviction, to await his removal. I think it unlikely that he would have remained here until February the following year - the normal practice would have been to remove him to the Hulks, where he would have been put to hard labour, until he was assigned to a transport. Unfortunately our Removal Orders for the period 1811-15 are few and I have been unable to ascertain the date he was removed from the Castle - our sole reference to him is in a copy of the gaol delivery which you have already found." 1814 February 22nd Sailed from England in the Convict Ship "Surry" arriving Sydney 28 July,1814. It was a first class 2 decker built in Harwick in 1811. Carrying 200 male convicts, left England 22/2/1814 and travelled via Rio. March 7 the first well-defined case of typhus made its appearance. 156 days from England when she arrived in Port Jackson her death-toll stood at 51 - 36 convicts, her master, the first and second mates, the boatswain, six seamen, the surgeon and four soldiers. Ships Master : James Paterson. For full details of voyage see item under Surry in Works. On the trip to NSW the ship had a detachment of the 46th Regiment (South Devonshire) aboard which was to be used guarding against aborigines, escaped convicts and bushrangers in the Sydney and Newcastle area. Inf. Ian Brothers, 2002 "Broxbornebury" 1814 Jeffrey Hart Bent, sent from England to become the Colony's first Supreme Court Judge and carrying the Charter of Justice, wrote a private account of the voyage (206 pages) N.L.A., Canberra ref. mfm 24752. Material in this diary relates to "Surry" 1814 which left England at the same time as "Broxbornebury". The latter ship had wives and children of some of the "Surry" convicts. "Log of Logs" Vol 1 by Ian Hawkins Nicholson gives two refs for "Broxbornebury" inf from the Nat.Lib -MS 195 and FM 3/21 Shipping documents - Convict Ships, Surrey, Fiche 634, p. 541: Native Place - Lancashire. Occupation - Engineer and Cotton Manufacturer. Age - 33. Height 5'6". Complexion - Ruddy. Hair - Black. Eyes - Brown. Disposed of to John Allen on arrival. On the left of the above fiche is the number 2407 which could refer to a T/L or Pardon (Some discrepancy in age - 26 years in the Calendar of Prisoners, 33 years in shipping documents. If death certificate to be believed (85 in 1862) he'd have been about 36 years) North Head Quarantine Station. The first known use of North Head as a quarantine site was in August 1828 with the detaining of the convict ship Bussorah Merchant when a number of crew became infected with smallpox...it remained in operation until the early 1980s. During its life 58- ships were detained at North Head and more than 13,000 people were quarantined.
1814, 9th March daughters Miriam (born 20/5/1810) and Maria (born 20/6/1812) are baptised at St. Michael's, Ashton-under-Lyne. Abode is given as Botany and Father's trade is a weaver.

Convicts were sent to Magistrates who distributed them to settlers requiring labourers, eg. some of the men aboard the Surry were sent to Windsor to be distributed amongst the settlers whose men were sent to the mountains.) Carpenter. Information given by wife Mary. (?) (First wife Mary supposed to have died 1847?). 1862 March 24. Buried Camperdown Cemetery. 50 years in Australia. Children listed as Sarah 65, Mary 62, Ann 60, Esther 58, Miles 56 (all living), Daniel died at the age of 3 yrs., Moses 50, Marion and Maria all living. (No age given for Marian and Maria - Miriam not listed - mother of James Pickering who gave James Slater as his grandfather and indicated that his mother was dead in his Shipping docs. (4 Pounds Remittance Reg. paid by Aunt Mrs. Mary Hall. Grandfather Slater builder in Balmain). Was second (?) wife Mary unfamiliar with Marian and Maria. A Marianne was christened 4/2/1820 Bolton, St. Peter. James Slater in Sydney by 1812 or 1814. Miriam and Maria were christened after his departure but what about Marianne. No J. Slater in passenger departures from Australia in 1819 (convict's term would have been served 1819). Passenger and Crew departures checked Jan. 5, 1819 - Dec. 1819. The above Moses would have been born in 1812 but was not baptised until 24/9/1815. Perhaps Marianne had a late baptism or perhaps she does not belong to this family. Baptismal records for St. Michael's, Ashton-under-Lyne indicate that Miriam and Maria were christened 9th March, 1814 but that Miriam was born on 20th May, 1810 and Maria on 20th June, 1812, prior to his conviction in 1813. The baptism record gives his trade as weaver and his abode as Botany. Botany is part of Ashton where Esther Hilton was living at the birth of her daughter Maria in 1824. Could wife Mary have been living in Botany with the family once James was transported? Perhaps the children were scattered to various relatives. Sands Sydney and NSW Directory, 1858-9 and 1861 James Slater Duke St., Balmain James Slater's will dated 30.1.1858 gives his address as Duke St., Balmain. I think it is possible that his daughter Esther Hilton was looking after him at this stage (and his wife Mary?) because he left all he had to her (Esther). Probate was granted 4.8.1863 to the value of 10 Pounds. Daughter Esther Hilton was executrix and sole beneficiary. Esther lived at Duke St., and on her death bequeathed the house to her daughter-in-law Jane Agnes Hilton (nee Tucker) wife of her son James. 1882 In daughter Mary Hall's d/c James' Occupation is given as Pile Driver." James Slater was buried in Camperdown Cemetery and his grave is next to various members of the Spence family2,6,9,10.

Mary MAYALL,5 daughter of Thomas MAYALL and Mary ANDREW, was born in 1776 in Saddleworth, yorkshire, England.3 She was baptised on 11 Jun 1776 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire, England.3 4 She died on 17 Jul 1847 in Balmain.3 2 4 V18471187 32B/1847. Mary was buried on 19 Jul 1847 in Old Burial Ground, later reinterred at Bunnerong.2 4 |
|
Her surname is according to daughter Mary's death cert. Mary Slater was living at Katharine Street, Ashton Under Lyne at the 1841 census. She was then described as a housekeeper, aged 60. Also in the household were Moses Slater, 30, Boot Maker; James Pickering, 25, Spinn?, Maria Pickering, 11, Labourer;James Pickering, 5; Mary PIckering, 2. Also James Walker, 25 and Ann Walker, 20, occupations unreadable. All household born in Lancashire except James Walker. "The convict's wife, Mary Slater only lived for three years in the colony. She died in Balmain on 17 July 1847, just two months before the couple's 50th wedding anniversary, aged 71 and was buried at the Old Burial Ground and later reinterred at Bunnerong cemetery with the husband of her eldest daughter, Sarah Bradford. There is some speculation that Sarah may also have been a convict but so far no death certificate can be found to verify that." The Slaters and the Mayalls were farmers and weavers for many centuries in England and embraced the new industrial technology of the 1800s. The ancestors of Mary Mayall can be traced back to the 1500s. Some of the towns they lived and worked in were Mossley, Ashton Under Lyne, Saddleworth and Botany. These towns were located in the Pennines on the border of Yorkshire and Lancashire. I have recently been in contact with the wife of a descendant of the Hall family who still lives in Ashton Under Lyne. Some of the Mayalls became quite wealthy and one branch of the family established the first cotton mill in the USA. There is quite an interesting story attached to that and they still celebrate Mayall Day in Maine USA."
Research by Joyce Gardner: "Mary Mayall confirmed as mother of Esther Hilton on her d/c but Mary's baptism, place and date and identification of parents are a conjecture. (IGI). There is a burial recorded in the St.Michael's, Ashton-under-Lyne for a Mary Slater of the town, on 29th November,1840, 63 years. (1840, 2341) However, the entry in the burial register doesn't say "wife of" and descendants of her daughter Mary Hall say that Mary came to NSW with the Hall family in 1844. Mary was alive in 1844 on migration of daughter Mary Hall to N.S.W. Listed as unassisted arrival 26/6/1844 per Briton from Liverpool. (Archive Reel 1271 - sheet listing Mary's name p. 157 Report of a Barque arrived in Port Jackson, this 26 day of June, 1844.). Report of the Barque Briton arriving Port Jackson 26 June, 1844 Tonnage 776 Master's Name: Hale From whence: Liverpool When sailed: 15 March Lading: Merchandise Agent: A. Smith Steerage Passengers: 9 including Mary Slater Daughter Mary Hall and family also travelled as bounty passengers on the same ship. Leonie Stanley and Marianne McGowan say she only lived a few years in the colony. Death of a Mary Slater Entry No. 792, Vol. No. 32. Slater, Mary Abode: Balmain. Died 17/7/1847. Buried 19/7/1847. Age: 71 yrs. Status: Married. By whom ceremony performed: Rev. J.G. Grylls. (Is this our Mary?) The above Mary was removed from the Old Burial Ground when it became the proposed site for the Central Railway Station. According to Glenn Bradford the exhumation was obtained by her daughter Sarah Bradford and she was re-interred at Bunnerong Cemetery with Sarah's husband John Bradford. Monumental Inscriptions at Bunnerong: 639 Mary Slater died 17th July 1847 aged 71 years. also John Bradford died 9th September 1847 aged 52 years. (Upright/fair) (Ref. 305 Bunn 4S/87 Bradford and Slater) John Bradford would have been born c.1795 There is no proof that this Mary Slater is the wife of James Slater, though from family stories it appears likely. It is difficult to prove that the wife of John Bradford is Sarah, the daughter of Mary and James Slater. Check further for a death of this Sarah and her parents may be listed. No death of Sarah Bradford can be found but she may have remarrried. Marriages of Sarah Bradford to Charles King, Cecil Pearson and Marshall F. Green (1899-1918) would be too old. 1. There is a Sarah Slater daughter of James Slater listed in the "1825 General Muster of N.S.W. of all Inhabitants Arranged Alphabetically". James is shown as Free by Servitude, arr. Surry 1814, sentence 7 years, cabinet maker, Parramatta with a wife Catherine and two daughters and a son. However on checking the "1822 General Muster and Land and Stock Muster Lists" this Catherine and children (Samuel, Sarah and Elizabeth) who arrived on the Providence in 1822, belong to John Slater who arrived on the Larkin with a life sentence. His occupation in 1822 is given as Constable residing at Parramatta. It seems the details have been mixed up as there is no mention of Catherine and the children belonging to James in 1828. 2. In the 1828 census James Slater and Sarah Slater are bracketed as a family. Sarah is 33 years of age in 1828 (b.c.1795) which means she was born before the marriage of Mary Mayall and James Slater. Their first Sarah was bpt. in 1797 and their second Sarah was bpt. in 1798. Sarah is shown as 65 in the d/c of James in 1862 (b.c.1797). Appendix 1 of the Census indicates the Sarah was recorded as Sarah Blendy in the original PRO and AONSW vols which seems to indicate that rather than a daughter she is probably shacked up with James and has adopted the Slater name. Sarah Blandy arrived on the Minstrel 25/10/1812 (sentenced at Middlesex to 7 years). 3. Another Sarah Slater arrived on the Minstrel who was sentenced at Middlesex for life on 15/1/1812. Glen Bradford suggests that John Bradford arrived as a convict on the Minerva on 16 December 1821. 4. Esther Davison paid for Sarah Slater (widow) and her daughter and children to come to NSW on the Fitzjames in 1860. She was aged 51 at that time (b.c.1809) so she was probably not her sister but some other relation. Esther's brother Miles was alive in 1862 so Sarah was not his widow and Moses Slater never married. John Bradford had died in 1847 so it is unlikely that Sarah was his widow who had reverted to her maiden name. Could she have come to NSW ahead of the family - perhaps as the convict in 1821? 5. There were no Sarah Slater's arriving in Sydney 1844-1859 or Port Phillip 1839-1851. 6. No death for Sarah Bradford, 1788-1888. No death John Bradford Pioneer Index. 7. Sarah lived on the farm that was attached to what is an Inn now called the Colliers Arms, Broadcar Lane, Hartshead. “A Directory of Ashton Pubs and their Licensees”, by Rob Magee, pub. Neil Richardson 1989 states: “It is not known just when the Colliers was first licensed – it appears in the records in 1857, when William Kenworthy kept the farmhouse-type pub near Hartshead Pike. In a police report of 1890 the pub was described as having no beds for travellers, but could provide refreshment other than drink for up to six persons. There was a stable and the two nearest public houses were 1,000 and 1,320 yards away.” The Pub has changed little in the last 100 years and still displays its old slate roof.1 |
